A notable display of personal respect amidst political rivalry emerged between Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The development unfolded after Rahul Gandhi identified Captain Amarinder Singh as a favoured figure among BJP leaders during an 'Ask Me Anything' session on Instagram. Responding to the comment, Captain Amarinder Singh emphasized that while his personal and familial bonds with the Gandhi family will remain unchanged, his political dedication lies firmly with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Rahul Gandhi's Interaction on Social Media
Organized to engage with youth and Gen-Z audiences, Rahul Gandhi held an interactive session on Instagram. When asked about leaders from the opposition party, he spoke warmly of Captain Amarinder Singh, noting that he shares a good rapport with him and highlighting his expertise in military history. During the exchange, Rahul Gandhi addressed him with the phrase 'Hello, Uncle Amarinder', a clip of which quickly gained widespread traction across social media platforms.
Captain Amarinder Singh Highlights Personal vs Political Distinction
Expressing satisfaction at Rahul Gandhi's words, Captain Amarinder Singh recalled his long association with the family, noting that he has known Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi since their childhood. He referenced his close friendship and schooling years shared with their father, former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi. Emphasizing that personal relationships globally operate independently of political affiliations, he illustrated his point using a historic family precedent.
Amarinder Singh cited the example of his mother, Maharani Mohinder Kaur, from 1980. At that time, while he served as a Congress Member of Parliament, his mother was an MP representing an opposition party. Despite their opposing political roles, their familial relationships remained steadfast and uncompromised.
BJP Criticism of the Statements
The exchange drew sharp criticism from Punjab BJP senior spokesperson Preetpal Singh Baliyanwal, who targeted the Congress leadership. Pointing back to the events of 2021 when Captain Amarinder Singh was forced to step down and leave the Congress, Baliyanwal remarked that Rahul Gandhi did not consider him 'cool' or an 'uncle' back then. He further contended that Rahul Gandhi is referencing Captain Amarinder Singh now only because the Punjab Congress is experiencing severe internal discord and acting like a sinking ship.
Congress Perspective and Political Context
Conversely, Congress leader Rana Gurjeet Singh acknowledged the deep historical ties between the two families. Describing Captain Amarinder Singh as a highly respected leader, he stated that had Amarinder Singh remained in the party, he would have acted as a father-like guiding light offering counsel to everyone.
The historical backdrop traces back to 2017, when Captain Amarinder Singh led the Congress party to power in Punjab. Following intense internal feuds in 2021, he resigned from the Chief Minister post and exited the Congress party, subsequently founding his own political group before merging it into the BJP.
