A significant political development has emerged in the Bankipur assembly by-election as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Abhishek Kumar Bunty, has officially withdrawn his nomination. This sudden withdrawal comes as a major blow to the party’s strategy in the region.
Reasons Behind the Withdrawal
Explaining his sudden exit from the electoral fray, Abhishek Kumar Bunty stated that he is unable to contest the by-election due to ongoing family reasons. He formally communicated this decision to the state party president, Sanjay Sarawagi, by submitting a letter. While expressing deep gratitude to both the central and state leadership of the BJP for selecting him as the NDA candidate for the Bankipur constituency, he maintained that he remains a dedicated party worker and will continue to serve the organization with sincerity despite stepping back from the election.
Strategic Calculations
The BJP had initially placed its bet on Abhishek Kumar Bunty to retain the Bankipur seat. Known to be close to the national party president, Nitin Nabin, Bunty was seen as a strategic pick to consolidate the party's traditional vote bank and secure support among Kayastha voters. The initial phase of his campaign had gained momentum, evidenced by a high-profile nomination event attended by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and various other senior NDA leaders. At that time, the candidate had also secured the blessings of Nitish Kumar, signalling a strong front for the BJP.
Prestige at Stake
The Bankipur seat is considered a stronghold for the BJP. With the seat falling vacant following the departure of Nitin Nabin to the Rajya Sabha, the upcoming by-election has become a matter of prestige for the party. The electoral landscape is highly competitive, with the Rashtriya Janata Dal fielding its own candidate and Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor actively campaigning in the constituency. The party now faces the challenge of regrouping its efforts to maintain its dominance in this critical assembly seat.
