In a major development regarding the high-profile liquor scam, custom milling irregularities, and coal levy cases in Chhattisgarh, former Congress treasurer Ramgopal Agrawal has been detained by the EOW (Economic Offences Wing). Agrawal, who had been absconding for three years, is embroiled in allegations involving a series of financial scams running into crores of rupees.
Tracing the Money Trail to Congress Bhawan
During the course of the investigation, a diary seized from the premises of Suryakant Tiwari revealed entries indicating that massive sums of money were funneled into the Congress Bhawan. It is alleged that Ramgopal Agrawal served as the conduit for these illicit funds. Investigators now aim to uncover the origin of these payments and determine how the money was ultimately utilized. The EOW has confirmed that the interrogation will not be limited to the coal levy case but will also cover the liquor distribution scandal, paddy procurement irregularities, and other related financial discrepancies. His detention is expected to unearth critical details that have remained shielded until now.
Involvement of Associates and Family Members
Evidence gathered by the agency suggests that Anwar Dhebar and his associates funneled large amounts of cash to Ramgopal Agrawal at the Congress Bhawan. The EOW is currently probing the mechanics of these financial deliveries, the specific roles played by various individuals involved, and the subsequent usage of these funds. Furthermore, investigations have linked Roshan Chandrakar to similar transactions involving the transfer of crores to Agrawal in connection with the paddy procurement scam. Due to these findings, the focus has expanded to include Agrawal’s family members; the EOW has already questioned his son, Vaibhav Agrawal, over the last two days to gather evidence regarding the collection, transportation, and receipt of these funds.
A Long Political Journey Ending in Custody
Ramgopal Agrawal’s political career dates back to 1980 when he first joined the Congress party. Over the decades, he remained a committed worker and was eventually appointed as the treasurer of the Chhattisgarh Congress Committee in 2013. Despite aspiring for electoral politics, he remained focused on organizational duties rather than contesting elections. Agrawal had been evading law enforcement ever since the ED conducted raids at his various properties in 2023. His recent detention by the EOW marks a significant shift in the legal proceedings, with authorities promising further action as the investigation continues.
