Tucked away within the scenic Aravali hills of Rajasthan's Sirohi district lies a remarkable sanctuary where divine traditions come alive. Situated near Isara village in the Pindwara tehsil at the foothills of Mount Abu, this sacred site is known as the Vastaji or Vastaneshwar Mahadev Temple. What sets this shrine apart is its unique dynamic, as it is fundamentally a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, yet Lord Vishnu resides here in the capacity of an honored guest. A Rare Convergence of Hari and Har
The inner sanctum of the temple houses both deities together, representing a rare confluence of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Visitors ascend a flight of stone steps on the hillside to reach a natural cave that serves as the main sanctum. Inside this cavern, the sacred Shivalinga stands facing the entrance, while a striking dark stone statue of Lord Vishnu rests on the right side. Several ancient stone carvings and smaller shrines are also positioned just outside the cave entrance.

From a historical standpoint, this temple is regarded as the ancient gateway to Mount Abu. The traditional annual circumambulation of Abu commences from this hallowed ground, drawing hundreds of devout participants. Legend dictates that when the region was established near Brahma Khai, thirty-three crores of celestial beings undertook a journey across the mountains. During this divine expedition, the deities reportedly spent a night resting at this very spot. The term Vastaji originated because the gods took up temporary residence here, cementing the location's mythological status.
Legacy of the Ascetic Saint Muniji Maharaj

The revered Mount Abu saint Muniji Maharaj spent numerous years performing intense penance at this location. Historically known as Bhakt Mauni Maharaj, he maintained a lifelong vow of silence while deeply immersed in meditation. Today, a magnificent memorial temple dedicated to him stands within the complex, attracting followers from distant regions. An annual fair is organized at the site to honor his memory and celebrate his spiritual contributions.
