In a major wildlife conservation initiative, the management of the world-renowned Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur has launched the first comprehensive scientific survey of freshwater turtles within its wetland ecosystem. Globally celebrated as a sanctuary for resident and migratory birds, the national park is now expanding its research scope to gain deeper insights into its aquatic reptile population. The project focuses on gathering systematic empirical data regarding turtle species diversity, demographic distribution, density, and habitat parameters.
Mapping Habitats and Breeding Dynamics
During the ongoing field survey, wildlife researchers and field officers are systematically evaluating various water bodies and wetland zones across the park. The objective is to identify prime habitats where turtle concentration is highest and pinpoint the environmental conditions favoring their survival. Additionally, the scientific team is recording vital ecological data concerning feeding habits, nesting grounds, breeding requirements, and shelter structures. The collected findings will directly inform future scientific management blueprints aimed at habitat restoration and species protection.
Crucial Role in Aquatic Ecological Balance
Data indicates that out of the 11 freshwater turtle species documented across the state of Rajasthan, 7 species inhabit the waters of Keoladeo National Park. Hosting nearly two-thirds of the state's total freshwater turtle diversity highlights the critical ecological importance of this wetland preserve. Freshwater turtles play a vital role in maintaining aquatic food chains and cleaning organic debris within wetland environments.
