In Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, a farmer has shown that beekeeping is not just about selling honey, it can also multiply farm output. Jaiprakash Pandey, a progressive farmer, added beehive boxes to his lemon orchard and pushed his production up by nearly four times, turning him into a role model for other farmers in the region.
An Idea Picked Up From Farming Research
Pandey started out by growing lemons on his land. He later began reading books and research material related to farming, where he learned that beekeeping can raise the yield of pulses and oilseed crops by 20 to 30 percent, and vegetable yields by up to 60 percent. The most striking finding was about lemon cultivation itself: because bees improve pollination, lemon orchards can see their output jump several times over. Armed with this knowledge, he decided to try it on his own farm.
Yield Roughly Quadruples, Income Runs Into Lakhs
Within a short span of introducing the bee boxes, Pandey started seeing dramatic results. The presence of bees led to a bumper crop in his lemon orchard, with total output rising nearly four times. That directly boosted his earnings, which now run into lakhs of rupees. Beekeeping has since become a solid source of income for him. Every year, he produces around 12 to 14 quintals of honey and sells it at Rs 300 per kilogram. From honey sales alone, he earns between Rs 3.60 lakh and Rs 4.20 lakh a year.
Bees That Don't Sting, They Befriend Him
Pandey says his bees do not sting because they have become like friends to him. They only sting when someone tries to harm them. To prove the point, he sat down on top of a beehive box himself, with bees covering his body, and was not stung even once.
Honoured by the Governor
Pandey is counted among the well-known farmers of Ballia district, and the Governor has honoured him for his efforts. His experience shows how the right knowledge, new techniques and working alongside nature can multiply earnings from a single piece of farmland.
