In the Hadoti region of Kota, Rajasthan, there lies an ancient and mysterious well nestled along the banks of the Chambal River, surrounded by captivating legends. The most intriguing aspect of this water body is its unique ability to alter its temperature in opposition to the prevailing weather conditions. During the peak of winter, the water within the well feels remarkably warm to the touch, whereas during the intense heat of summer, it becomes exceptionally cool, providing relief from the scorching temperatures outside.

A Centuries-Old Architectural Marvel

According to local resident Pawan Pancholi, this well is estimated to be between 200 and 300 years old. It was meticulously carved out of massive natural rock formations, and even today, the source of its water remains an enigma. Despite various observations, there is no definitive scientific explanation regarding where this water originates beneath the earth. Pawan Pancholi shares that his family has been dedicated to the service of this site for three generations. The tradition began with his maternal grandfather, followed by his father, and for the last 25 years, Pawan himself has been handling the regular maintenance and care of the site.

Traditional Uses of the Water

Years ago, before the arrival of modern water pipelines and civic facilities in the area, the residents relied heavily on this well for their daily needs. It was considered so sacred and pure that the water was used exclusively for cooking during religious festivals, community gatherings, and large feasts. The purity of the water made it a cornerstone of local life and culture in times past.

Beliefs in Medicinal Healing

Local folklore suggests that the water in this well possesses significant medicinal properties. Many people firmly believe that individuals suffering from skin conditions such as eczema, ringworm, itching, and other ailments find relief after bathing in it. This reputation attracts visitors from far and wide who come to bathe in its waters. Many devotees also carry the water home in bottles, treating it as a holy resource for their families.

Spiritual Significance and Rituals

The water of this well is regarded as highly sacred and is integral to the local temple rituals. The deities enshrined in the nearby temple undergo their daily Abhishek and Panchasnan using water drawn directly from this well. The well is designed so that water flows continuously; it enters the structure and eventually exits through a 'Gomukhi' (a cow-mouth-shaped outlet) to merge into the Chambal River. Many devotees find spiritual solace in sitting under this flowing stream of water to bathe.

Commitment to Cleanliness

The upkeep of the well’s purity is a community-driven effort. Local devotees arrive daily in the morning and evening to clean the surroundings. Because of the natural and constant flow of the water, impurities do not stagnate, and any sediment is carried away towards the river. This dynamic flow ensures that the water in the well remains clean, clear, and transparent throughout the year, preserving its natural charm for all who visit.
