Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha stated on Monday that his government stands fully prepared to enforce the Uniform Civil Code in the state as soon as the central administration issues an official directive regarding the matter. Speaking directly to journalists at a press conference in Agartala, the Chief Minister made it clear that the state administration has taken note of the ongoing national discussions through media reports and will act swiftly upon receiving formal instructions from the capital.
The remarks from the Chief Minister arrived merely a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared on Sunday that administrations led by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its political allies across 21 states will introduce and implement the UCC prior to the arrival of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Elaborating on his government's stance, the Chief Minister noted that while they initially gathered details through news reports, any formal communication from the central authorities will prompt immediate and decisive administrative action from the state machinery. At the same time, he pointed out that based on his current understanding, the implementation may exclude the designated tribal regions within the state.
Understanding the Scope and the Upcoming Campaigns
The Uniform Civil Code is designed to establish a unified and standardized set of legal regulations governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, property succession, and live-in relationships, ensuring these rules apply equally regardless of an individual religious background. Alongside discussing this major legal reform, the Chief Minister also announced that the state administration will roll out a month-long series of events starting on September 17 to honor Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his completion of 25 years in public service spanning roles as a Chief Minister and Prime Minister.
However, these celebrations will face a brief procedural delay in gaining full momentum due to the ongoing Model Code of Conduct currently enforced across the state. This code was triggered by the upcoming elections for the Village Committees operating under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. Consequently, the Chief Minister explained that the extensive month-long initiatives will accelerate significantly starting from September 29, which is the day immediately following the conclusion of the polling process.
Supervisory Framework and Public Representative Involvement
The upcoming month-long campaign is designed to showcase the various achievements and public welfare initiatives spearheaded by the Prime Minister. To ensure seamless execution across diverse regions, the state government has established a dedicated monitoring committee. This supervisory panel is headed by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and is tasked with overseeing the proper implementation of the comprehensive 12-point program across multiple sectors, including urban centers, educational institutions, and grassroots anganwadi facilities.
Furthermore, the administration has ensured broad-based participation by confirming that state cabinet ministers, legislative assembly members, and various other elected public representatives will actively engage with the scheduled events. This widespread involvement aims to communicate the core messages of welfare and development directly to communities residing in both urban neighborhoods and remote corners of the state, ensuring the administrative agenda reaches every designated target area effectively.
