Ahead of Uttar Pradesh's 2027 assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party appears to be reworking its visual identity. Members of its student wing, the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, are now wearing blue T-shirts instead of the traditional red, with the party's cycle symbol and a photograph of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar printed on them.
Akhilesh Yadav spotted in blue too
Party chief Akhilesh Yadav himself was recently seen wearing a blue gamcha, a move that had already drawn attention in political circles. With the student wing's T-shirts now following the same colour, it looks less like a coincidence and more like a deliberate shift in the party's messaging.
Why blue matters in UP politics
Blue has long been associated with the Dalit community and with Mayawati in Indian politics. The Bahujan Samaj Party's flag and its election symbol are both blue, so the Samajwadi Party's choice is being read as a calculated attempt to reach out to Dalit voters.
A shrinking rival, a growing contest
Dalit voters make up around 21 percent of the electorate in Uttar Pradesh, a share large enough to swing outcomes in many seats. Mayawati's hold over this vote bank has been slipping in recent elections. The Samajwadi Party won 37 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a result that has boosted its confidence heading into the next round. By adopting blue, Akhilesh Yadav is seen as making a specific play for younger, Gen Z Dalit voters, in the hope that it pays off when Uttar Pradesh votes in 2027.
