Sahibabad assembly constituency in the Ghaziabad district of western Uttar Pradesh stands out as one of the most closely watched seats in the state. Despite that state-level wave, BSP candidate Amarpal Sharma secured an impressive win locally, earning the distinction of becoming the first member of the legislative assembly from Sahibabad.
According to official data from the Election Commission of India, BSP nominee Amarpal Sharma polled 1,24,332 votes. BJP fielded Sunil Kumar Sharma, who finished as the runner-up with 99,984 votes. The margin of victory between the two contenders was 24,348 votes. The contest saw strong multi-cornered participation across different parties.
In that 2012 race, the Congress party fielded Satish Chandra Tyagi, who managed to collect 51,195 votes. The Samajwadi Party was also in contention, putting forward Prahlad Sharma, who garnered 36,266 votes. Even though the Samajwadi Party achieved an outright majority across Uttar Pradesh in 2012, its candidate in Sahibabad finished in fourth place.
Landslide Turnaround for Sunil Kumar Sharma in 2017
The electoral balance of power in Sahibabad shifted dramatically in the 2017 assembly elections. The BJP once again placed its trust in Sunil Kumar Sharma, and the electorate responded with overwhelming support. Sharma received 2,62,741 votes, registering a victory margin that stood as the single largest across the entire state of Uttar Pradesh in that election cycle. He defeated his closest rival by an astonishing difference of 1,50,685 votes.
The contest was particularly notable because Sunil Kumar Sharma faced off against Amarpal Sharma, who had previously won the seat on a BSP ticket in 2012 but was contesting the 2017 election under the Congress banner. The Congress and Samajwadi Party had entered an alliance for the 2017 polls, and the seat was allotted to Congress in the distribution arrangement. Amarpal Sharma secured 1,12,056 votes to take the second spot. Meanwhile, the BSP fielded Jalaluddin, whose tally fell sharply to 41,654 votes, relegating the party to third place.
Record Margin Expanded Further in the 2022 Assembly Polls
Entering the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP continued with Sunil Kumar Sharma as its representative in Sahibabad. The contest once again featured Amarpal Sharma as his primary challenger, though under yet another party banner. Around one year prior to the election, Amarpal Sharma had joined the Samajwadi Party, with Akhilesh Yadav personally overseeing his induction into the party fold.
Official records from the Election Commission of India show that Sunil Kumar Sharma secured 3,22,882 votes in 2022, while Samajwadi Party candidate Amarpal Sharma gathered 1,08,047 votes. Sunil Kumar Sharma shattered his own earlier state record by winning by a historic margin of 2,14,835 votes, emerging as the MLA with the highest victory margin in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections.
Compared to 2017, Sunil Kumar Sharma increased his victory margin by 64,150 votes. The BSP witnessed a further decline in its voter turnout, with party candidate Ajeet Kumar Pal managing just 24,136 votes and finishing third once again.
Shifting Dynamics and the Road to 2027
