Country's First Three Tier Transport Corridor Planned for Uttar Pradesh Capital, Metro to Run Above Elevated Shaheed Path

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced a groundbreaking three-tier connectivity project for Shaheed Path in Lucknow alongside major expansion plans for the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway.

A transformative infrastructure initiative is in the works to overhaul urban commuting in the capital of Uttar Pradesh. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced an ambitious project featuring three-tier connectivity along the prominent Shaheed Path in Lucknow. Once executed, this initiative will mark the country's first transportation corridor of its kind, integrating multiple travel modes along a single vertical alignment.

Three Tier Connectivity Design on Shaheed Path

Under this engineering blueprint, a fresh elevated roadway will be constructed directly above the existing Shaheed Path corridor. Following that structural layer, a metro rail transit line will be established directly over the elevated road deck. This tiered arrangement will see surface traffic flowing at ground level, vehicular traffic on the elevated tier, and metro trains operating along the highest tier, effectively maximizing mobility across the congested stretch.

Expansion Blueprint for the Lucknow Kanpur Expressway

Alongside the Shaheed Path corridor, Nitin Gadkari revealed extensive expansion plans for the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway. The current expressway structure covers a length of 63 kilometers, constructed at an expenditure of approximately 4,200 crore rupees. The Union Minister stated that the expressway will be extended to reach the outermost boundary of Lucknow, ensuring maximum regional connectivity and passenger convenience. At present, this expressway originates in Lucknow and routes onward while linking Unnao district.

Interconnection with Agra, Ganga, and Farrukhabad Expressways

The broader strategy aims to establish continuous, high-speed regional linkage across Uttar Pradesh. Preparations are underway to extend the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway onward toward Agra. In subsequent development phases, this roadway will link with the Farrukhabad Link Expressway, which in turn will integrate with both the Ganga Expressway and the Lucknow-Agra Expressway. The overarching objective is to provide Lucknow with uninterrupted highway connectivity on all sides.

The proposed three-tier corridor along Shaheed Path marks a pivotal shift in urban transit planning for Lucknow. Given the severe spatial constraints and growing traffic density, vertical infrastructure integration is essential for sustainable mobility. Furthermore, interconnecting the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway with the Ganga and Agra Expressways will establish central Uttar Pradesh as a seamless regional logistics corridor. From a governance perspective, the timely execution of this multi-layered project will heavily depend on seamless inter-agency coordination and strict adherence to implementation timelines on the ground.

Building on Rohan's point, from a public safety and law enforcement perspective, managing security, emergency response, and traffic enforcement on a complex three-tier corridor will present significant challenges. As high-speed traffic flows across multiple elevated levels and expanded expressway networks, integrating robust surveillance, rapid accident response protocols, and continuous patrolling becomes critical. Ensuring seamless law and order, effective traffic policing, and commuter safety must be embedded into the structural planning of this multi-layered transit ecosystem from the very beginning.
