Erratic Monsoon Patterns Sweep Across Uttar Pradesh as Bijnor Faces Flood Woes While Other Districts Swelter in Intense Humidity

Uttar Pradesh is experiencing a highly contrasting weather pattern with heavy rain and flood alerts in Terai and western districts, while other parts cope with intense sunshine and humidity.

The ongoing monsoon season in Uttar Pradesh is showcasing a highly erratic and contrasting pattern. While some regions are experiencing relentless downpours that show no signs of stopping, other districts are grappling with scorching sun and oppressive humidity. Since early morning, several areas of the state have been sweltering under sticky, humid conditions. Amidst these diverse weather patterns, the weather department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for as many as 42 districts across the state. Vigorous rainfall warnings span from the Terai belt to both western and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh. In stark contrast to these rain forecasts, Noida woke up to bright and clear sunshine. Meanwhile, cities like Kanpur, Varanasi, and Ghazipur are experiencing a heavy buildup of dark clouds accompanied by intense humidity, following scattered drizzles in some areas late last night.

High Humidity Grips Kanpur and Varanasi with Hopes of Showers

In the metropolitan city of Kanpur, the weather remains largely stable but highly uncomfortable. The absence of significant rainfall since yesterday has led to a dramatic rise in humidity levels, leaving residents feeling sticky and exhausted. Intermittent patches of sunlight breaking through the cloud cover have further exacerbated the sultry conditions. Meteorological experts have noted that the humidity levels in the atmosphere have peaked. However, there is a silver lining as light drizzles and sporadic showers are anticipated by this evening or tomorrow. According to weather analysts, this humid pattern with intermittent light rains is expected to persist over Kanpur and its adjoining regions for the next two to three days.

Simultaneously, the holy city of Varanasi is witnessing a continuous movement of dense, dark clouds across the sky, yet the lack of active rainfall has kept the humidity exceptionally high. Although several localities in Varanasi received light drizzles late last night, no fresh showers have been recorded since this morning. The meteorological department predicts that Varanasi and its surrounding districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall over the next two to three days, which could bring the much-needed respite from the heat. Currently, the maximum temperature in Varanasi is hovering around 33 degrees Celsius, though the high moisture content makes it feel significantly hotter.

Pleasant Weather in Ghazipur Contrasts with Chitrakoot's Scorching Heat

In Ghazipur, the sky remains overcast with thick clouds. The region experienced a decent spell of rainfall yesterday, which has helped maintain a cool and pleasant breeze. The persistent cloud cover has kept the ambient temperature low, and locals are highly optimistic about receiving more rain in the coming hours. On the contrary, the sacred town of Chitrakoot in the Bundelkhand region is experiencing a completely different weather extreme. Right from the early hours of the morning, Chitrakoot has been baking under intense and direct sunshine. This sharp spike in solar intensity has brought back the oppressive humidity, causing severe discomfort to residents and visiting pilgrims alike. According to the weather department's latest update, there are currently no immediate signs of rainfall in Chitrakoot and its neighboring areas.

Orange Alert Declared for 13 Terai Districts Facing Torrential Rains

Taking note of the intensifying monsoon systems, the weather department has sounded an orange alert for exceptionally heavy rainfall across 13 districts in the Terai belt. This high-priority warning covers districts such as Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Gonda, Kushinagar, Mau, Ballia, Deoria, Gorakhpur, and Sant Kabir Nagar, among others. Local administrations in these areas have been put on high alert to handle any flooding or waterlogging emergencies. Beyond these 13 Terai districts, heavy rain warnings have also been extended to 29 other districts across Purvanchal and western Uttar Pradesh. Experts predict that active monsoonal currents will continue to lash both eastern and western Uttar Pradesh with substantial rainfall until July 13.

The state capital, Lucknow, has also been enveloped in dense cloud cover since morning, with several localities experiencing intermittent spells of rain. The weather office has issued a heavy rain alert for Lucknow as well, indicating that light to moderate showers and patchy drizzles will continue to impact the capital city and its surrounding areas until July 13.

Shifting Monsoon Trough to Keep Rainfall Active

Providing deeper insights into the meteorological shifts, senior weather scientist Mohammad Danish explained that several districts in western Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Shahjahanpur, have recently recorded extremely heavy precipitation. Similarly, Barabanki and other parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh have also witnessed heavy downpours. Moving forward, both the western and eastern divisions of the state remain highly vulnerable to intense rain spells today. An orange alert has been specifically implemented for Central Uttar Pradesh and the Terai belt due to the high probability of heavy downpours.

Meteorologists explain that the monsoon trough is gradually migrating northward. This atmospheric movement is highly conducive to keeping the monsoon active over Central Uttar Pradesh and the Terai region, ensuring steady and heavy rainfall over the next few days. Parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh are also expected to experience heavy to very heavy precipitation as a result of this shifting system.

Flood Crisis in Bijnor as Pahara River Overflows

In western Uttar Pradesh, Bijnor district has been hit hard by continuous torrential rains over the past 48 hours, throwing normal life completely out of gear. The relentless rainfall has caused the local Pahara River to swell dangerously. The rapid rise in the river's water level has inundated nearly half a dozen villages in the Badhapur area. Vast stretches of agricultural fields, connecting roads, and residential houses have been submerged under floodwaters, raising concerns of widespread damage. Local administrative teams have rushed to the affected sites to monitor the situation and coordinate relief operations.

The most pressing challenge for the local villagers is crossing the overflowing river. Due to the absence of permanent bridges and proper boat services in these remote pockets, helpless residents are risking their lives by using wooden carts or buggies to cross the turbulent waters. The district administration has issued a strong advisory urging people to stay away from the riverbanks and relocate to safer, elevated grounds. Rescue and relief teams remain on high alert. With the weather office forecasting more rain over the next 24 hours, there is a high likelihood that the Pahara River's water levels will rise even further, compounding the crisis.

Temperature and Air Pollution Spike in Sambhal

In sharp contrast to the flood-affected regions, Sambhal district has experienced a dramatic and dry weather shift over the last 24 hours. Due to the complete absence of rainfall on Friday, temperatures in Sambhal surged. The maximum temperature rose by 4 degrees Celsius above the normal range, subjecting residents to sudden, dry heat. Along with the temperature hike, the region's air quality has also deteriorated. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Sambhal climbed to 101, placing it in the moderate pollution category. This drop in air quality is attributed to dry winds and rising dust levels due to the lack of rain.

What this means for you

  • In Uttar Pradesh: Heavy rains and flood-like situations in Bijnor and the Terai belt pose risk of waterlogging, infrastructure damage, and travel disruptions, requiring local residents and commuters to remain vigilant.
  • In other areas: Intense humidity and heat in regions like Kanpur, Varanasi, and Chitrakoot could lead to discomfort, health-related issues, and an increase in power consumption.
