Concerns over civic governance and construction standards have resurfaced in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, as allegations of poor material quality plague a major drainage development project. Despite ambitious smart city pledges and multi-million rupee allocations for infrastructure across urban wards, the local civic infrastructure routinely crumbles during the monsoon season. The latest controversy has centered on Ward 35, where sub-standard materials are reportedly being utilized in the construction of a high-budget reinforced cement concrete drain along Lalau Road. Laborers were observed mixing soil-contaminated gravel into the concrete mixture, threatening the structural integrity of the public drain.
Sub-Standard Materials in 66.89 Lakh Rupee Project
The municipal project in Ward 35 spans from the Lalau water tank to Maa Santoshi Traders, designed to resolve long-standing waterlogging issues in the area. Firozabad Municipal Corporation sanctioned a specific budget of 66,89,445 rupees for the construction of this RCC drain. However, physical inspections at the construction site exposed glaring quality violations. Soil had been piled underneath the gravel mounds, which workers were shoveling directly into the concrete mixing process. Experts note that incorporating soil into cement mortar significantly reduces concrete strength, rendering the RCC structure highly vulnerable to early damage and erosion.
Contractor Bunty Denies Intentional Contamination
When questioned on site regarding the visible soil mixed into the gravel, the project contractor, identified as Bunty, dismissed claims of intentional adulteration. He asserted that there was no deliberate mixing of soil and suggested that only a minor amount of dust or dirt might be present in the supply. Nevertheless, following the confrontation over construction quality, the use of the contaminated batch of gravel was halted at the site. The incident has raised critical questions regarding the supervision of public works contracts funded by municipal taxpayers.
Pattern of Infrastructure Failures Across Firozabad
This incident at Lalau Road is part of a broader trend of failing civic infrastructure across Firozabad. Recently, a newly constructed drain in Shriram Colony, located along Kotla Road, collapsed completely after brief rainfall. Similar reports of premature structural failure in newly built gutters and drains have emerged from multiple neighborhoods. These recurring collapses not only disrupt daily life for residents due to severe waterlogging but also result in financial losses worth crores of rupees to the municipal treasury.
Mayor Kamini Rathore Declines Comment Amid Growing Protest
Despite the growing public outcry over compromised construction standards, Mayor Kamini Rathore declined to comment when asked about the irregularities in Ward 35. The mayor's refusal to address the issue has drawn criticism from local citizens, who accuse municipal leaders of ignoring contractor negligence. Residents are now demanding an independent audit of the 66.89 lakh rupee Lalau Road project, alongside strict disciplinary action against contractors involved in delivering sub-standard civic works.
