Security forces in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, intervened to stop the Tridandi Mahasabha from conducting Jalabhishek at the disputed Laxman Teela site. Members of the organization had arrived from Bithoor carrying sacred Gangajal for the ritual on the final Monday of Sawan. Anticipating potential tension and a breakdown of public order, police restricted the group from taking to the streets. Heavy police deployments were subsequently established outside the Mahasabha office as well as around the Teele Wali Masjid.
Despite being blocked by authorities, representatives of the Mahasabha maintained a defiant stance, asserting that while police successfully halted them today, they remain determined to carry out the ritual in the future. The site currently houses the Teele Wali Masjid, but Hindu claimants maintain that the location is historically Laxman Teela and houses the Taleshwar Mahadev temple, which they allege was demolished to build the mosque. The legal battle over the ownership and religious rights of this land is currently underway in court.
Hindu Side Demands Worship Rights
For several years, Hindu litigants have persistently sought formal permission to conduct religious prayers and worship at Laxman Teela. According to representatives of the Hindu side, the Teele Wali Masjid situated in an older quarter of Lucknow is a repurposed Laxman Teela. They claim the sacred ground once held temples dedicated to Shesh Nagesh Tiveshwar and Shesh Nagesh Patal Koop. Furthermore, the litigants allege that during the reign of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, the original structure was forcibly dismantled and a mosque was constructed in its place.
This dispute entered formal legal channels when the Hindu side approached a district court in Lucknow during February 2024. Court filings noted an incident from June 2023, when individuals attempting to offer prayers at Laxman Teela were allegedly intimidated and threatened by members of the Muslim community. Following this confrontation, a formal petition was submitted seeking unconditional permission to worship at the location. Judicial proceedings regarding this matter continue as courts review the historical claims presented by both communities.
Broader Disputes Across Varanasi And Mathura
While the long-standing dispute surrounding the Ram Mandir in Uttar Pradesh has reached a resolution, several other high-profile religious sites across the state remain subjects of active litigation in various courts. Legal battles concerning the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and the Krishna Janmabhoomi site in Mathura continue to progress through the judicial system. In Mathura, the primary contention centers around the Shahi Idgah complex.
