Monsoon activity across India has intensified significantly as a fresh atmospheric depression formed over the coastal regions of the Bay of Bengal. According to the latest forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this weather system will maintain its influence across the country for the next seven days, until August 19, 2026. States including West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh face heightened risks of severe downpours. Meanwhile, northern plains, hill regions, and southern peninsular areas are also expected to experience widespread moderate to heavy precipitation. Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution as torrential rains could disrupt transportation networks and daily movement.
Extremely Heavy Downpours and Strong Winds in Eastern India
Meteorological projections indicate that the depression over coastal West Bengal will cause intense rainfall activity between August 13 and August 19, 2026. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand on August 13. Similarly, Chhattisgarh is slated to receive extremely heavy rainfall on August 13 and 14, followed by very heavy spells on August 15 and isolated heavy rains on August 16 and 17.
Severe weather conditions in Jharkhand and Odisha will be accompanied by frequent lightning strikes and powerful squalls. Wind speeds in these regions during thunderstorms are projected to range between 50 and 60 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. Detailed spatial map alerts were highlighted via an official bulletin posted on X to inform the public about regional vulnerabilities.
Central India will also witness active monsoon conditions. Eastern Madhya Pradesh is anticipated to record widespread rainfall through August 19, while Western Madhya Pradesh will see significant precipitation between August 15 and 17. Vidarbha is expected to experience widespread rain until August 18, with heavy downpours occurring between August 14 and 16. Officials have highlighted lightning risks across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, urging citizens to avoid open areas during thunderstorms.
Northwest India and Delhi-NCR Prepare for Prolonged Spells
Northwestern states will experience continuous precipitation across both mountainous and plain areas. Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh are set for widespread rain until August 19. In the Himalayan region, Himachal Pradesh faces very heavy rainfall on August 14 as well as August 17 and 18. Uttarakhand is likely to witness similar intense downpours on August 14 and during August 16 and 17.
In the plains, Punjab will receive widespread rain on August 14 and 15. Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are slated for active weather on August 14-15 and August 17. The national capital region of Delhi-NCR is expected to see isolated heavy rainfall between August 14 and 19. Western Uttar Pradesh will witness heavy precipitation on August 15 and 16, whereas Eastern Uttar Pradesh will remain under a wet spell from August 14 through August 18.
Widespread Rains Forecast for Northeastern and Western States
Northeastern India will see steady monsoon activity across all seven states through August 19. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam-Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are projected to receive widespread rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh will likely experience very heavy rainfall from August 15 to 17, while Assam and Meghalaya will maintain heavy rain alerts throughout the week.
In Western India, coastal Konkan and Goa will remain under widespread rainfall conditions through August 19. Madhya Maharashtra will record heavy rain until August 15, escalating to extremely heavy downpours on August 16. The Gujarat region is forecasted to receive isolated rainfall on August 14.
Southern India Faces Squally Winds and Downpours
Across Southern India, Coastal Karnataka will remain under a widespread rainfall regime until August 19. Kerala and Mahe will experience active rain until August 17, alongside Lakshadweep. Kerala and Tamil Nadu are expected to record isolated heavy rain on August 14.
Thunderstorm activity accompanied by squally winds and lightning has been forecasted across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Strong squally winds are anticipated over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema until August 17, over Telangana until August 16, and in parts of Karnataka on August 14.
