A tragic incident unfolded in Raghunathpur village, located within the Suti police station limits of West Bengal's Murshidabad district, on Thursday evening, when a 21-year-old man violently attacked four young girls, all of whom were his relatives, using a sickle. The children were playing together near the residence when the noise accidentally disrupted the suspect's sleep. Enraged by the sudden interruption, the young man summoned the four girls inside a room and launched an unexpected, indiscriminate assault with the sharp tool. Three of the children lost their lives due to severe injuries, while the fourth remains in critical condition at a hospital. The violent episode has left the local community in deep shock and grief.
Lured into a Room and Attacked With a Sharp Weapon
According to information obtained from local residents and police authorities, the deceased children have been identified as four-year-old Monifa Khatun, twelve-year-old Ishrat Parveen, and ten-year-old Anisha Khatun. The fourth child, Nusrat Jahan, suffered critical injuries and is currently fighting for her life under intensive medical care at a nearby health facility. All four victims were close relatives of the accused youth and had been playing together outside the house when the attack occurred.
Investigators noted that the commotion created during their play disturbed the sleep of 21-year-old Ghulam Sarwar. Agitated by the noise, the suspect called all four girls into a room under the pretext of speaking with them, and suddenly produced a sickle to strike them repeatedly. One girl died on the spot from extensive wounds, while two others passed away during treatment at the hospital. Doctors continue to monitor the surviving child's precarious condition.
Questions Over Substance Abuse and Mental State
The sudden and horrific nature of the crime has raised intense speculation regarding the suspect's motivation and health. Anarul Islam, the father of one of the deceased girls, stated that Ghulam Sarwar has been struggling with heroin addiction. He explained that being abruptly woken up triggered an uncontrollable outburst of rage in the suspect, culminating in the fatal assault on his young family members.
In contrast, local villager Ansar Sheikh voiced complete bewilderment over the violent act, stating that the community could not comprehend why Ghulam Sarwar would target four children from his own family. Ansar Sheikh remarked that the suspect might have experienced a sudden psychiatric episode or had been suffering from severe mental health issues, as there appeared to be no rational motive for inflicting such lethal violence upon four young relatives.
Police Custody and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
Upon receiving word of the violent assault, a contingent from the Suti police station arrived quickly at Raghunathpur village to secure the crime scene and manage the gathering crowd. Law enforcement officials acted swiftly to apprehend the suspect, identified as Ghulam Sarwar, who is also known locally by the alias Badshah, taking him into custody directly from the location.
Police have taken possession of the deceased children's bodies to perform mandatory post-mortem examinations and complete formal legal procedures. Senior police officials confirmed that a detailed investigation is actively underway, with interrogations being conducted to determine the precise sequence of events and confirm the underlying triggers behind the tragedy.
