In a major milestone for maritime self sufficiency, Hindustan Shipyard Limited on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, launched the first Fleet Support Ship constructed for the Indian Navy, named Surya. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the commissioning events, formally introducing Surya to naval operations. The launch of the massive auxiliary vessel arrived ahead of the scheduled induction of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft, delivering an immediate enhancement to India's naval endurance. During the very same ceremony, two vital manufacturing assets were commissioned at the shipyard: a newly developed advanced slipway and a 300 ton capacity Goliath crane. Simultaneously, shipwrights laid the keel for the second vessel in the fleet support series, reaffirming that modernization within the Indian Navy is moving in tandem with upgrades across the Army and Air Force.
Three Naval Milestones Unveiled Simultaneously
Addressing the gathering, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored that witnessing three distinct achievements at a single venue reflected India's burgeoning shipbuilding prowess and maritime resolve. He noted that launching the lead vessel captures current technological accomplishment, laying the keel for the sister ship demonstrates ongoing determination, and operationalising the new slipway stands as proof of expanding shipyard capacity. Rajnath Singh emphasised that the facility is doing far more than constructing vessels, as it is actively consolidating the strategic bedrock for India's long term oceanic security.
Indian Ocean Vigilance and Reviving Naval Heritage
Rajnath Singh highlighted that the Indian Navy has repeatedly validated its operational readiness as the first responder and preferred security provider across the Indian Ocean region. Whether countering maritime piracy, conducting evacuation missions in hostile conditions, providing humanitarian assistance, or responding to sudden disaster relief emergencies, naval personnel have maintained rapid reaction capability. The Defence Minister remarked that India's evolution into a formidable maritime nation is not an unexpected departure, but rather the revitalization of a storied oceanic heritage established centuries ago. In advancing this maritime continuum, Hindustan Shipyard Limited plays an indispensable role.
Decades of Custodianship and Mini Ratna Distinction
Describing Hindustan Shipyard Limited as the custodian of India's sovereign maritime capacity, the Defence Minister commended its operational record spanning more than eight decades in meeting national defence demands. Since being placed under the administrative aegis of the Ministry of Defence, targeted ministerial support and institutional diligence have generated a dramatic financial turnaround for the facility. Its formal elevation to Mini Ratna Category-1 status in 2025 serves as concrete verification of this structural revival and manufacturing discipline. Rajnath Singh observed that maritime dominance cannot be forged in isolation by naval crews or individual dockyards, but instead demands an integrated national ecosystem.
Interconnected Defense Ecosystem Aiming for Global Markets
The Defence Minister expressed conviction that the Indian Navy, Hindustan Shipyard Limited, the Defence Research and Development Organisation, academic institutions, industrial players, MSMEs, and emerging startups must operate as a unified defense collective. Fleet support vessels such as Surya directly amplify operational reach, mission endurance, and logistical sustainability across distant waters. Over the past decade, Indian defense manufacturing has witnessed a structural shift, moving away from imported platforms toward the domestic fabrication of sophisticated equipment, guided-missile warships, and submarines. Rajnath Singh concluded that while self reliance remains a necessary staging ground, the ultimate frontier is achieving international market competitiveness so Indian shipyards can supply vessels and sustainment services to friendly nations, fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's roadmap for a developed and secure India by 2047.
