Commuters at Patna Junction are set to benefit from a sweeping infrastructure upgrade as the Railways prepares to build a high-tech smart parking facility in the area stretching from Doodh Market to GPO, covering roughly 1.30 lakh square feet. The facility will be able to accommodate around 6,000 vehicles, including both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, and construction is expected to begin in September 2026. The tender process for the project has already been initiated.
What the Project Involves
Beyond the parking facility itself, the project also includes the creation of a new circulating area spanning approximately 1.70 lakh square feet around the station premises. This expanded traffic zone is designed to ease the flow of passengers in and out of the junction, and is expected to significantly reduce the congestion that routinely builds up on the roads outside Patna Junction.
Funding and Structural Shifts
The first phase of the project will require an expenditure of approximately Rs 10 crore. To free up space for the parking facility and the new circulating area, the existing power house and communication office will be relocated to Karbigahia. Railway officials have noted that this relocation will make more comprehensive and forward-looking development of the station complex possible in the future.
Two New Access Routes for Passengers
Once the revamped layout is in place, commuters will have two primary routes to reach Patna Junction. The first will approach from the direction of Mahavir Mandir, while the second will come through near GPO Golumbar. This means passengers travelling from both the eastern and western sides of the city will be spared the inconvenience of taking lengthy detours to reach the station. With vehicle flow split across two entry points, the frequency and intensity of traffic jams near the station is expected to drop considerably.
Book Your Parking Slot Before You Leave Home
The defining feature of this smart parking project will be its digital booking capability. Drivers will be able to reserve a parking slot in advance through a mobile app or a website, so they will not have to hunt for a spot after reaching the station. The availability of online ticketing and digital payment options will make the entire parking experience faster, more transparent, and far more user-friendly than what currently exists.
High-Tech Surveillance and Monthly Passes for Regulars
The parking complex will be equipped with modern surveillance technology to protect vehicles parked within the premises. Enhanced monitoring is expected to substantially lower the risk of theft and other incidents. For daily commuters who visit Patna Junction regularly, a monthly pass facility will be introduced, freeing them from having to purchase a separate ticket on every visit.
A Transformative Upgrade for Patna Junction
The Railways is confident that once this smart parking project is complete, the overall passenger experience at Patna Junction will improve markedly. The long-standing shortage of organised parking space will be largely resolved, traffic movement around the station will become more orderly, and the thousands of travellers who pass through the junction every day will gain access to modern, secure, and digitally enabled infrastructure.
