How Mithila Tradition Chumouun Acts As A Spiritual Shield Against Evil Eye And Bad Energy

Rooted in Mithila ancient heritage, the ritual of Chumouun is observed across auspicious occasions to shield individuals from negative influences and evil eye.

Deep within the rich cultural heritage of the Mithila region lie numerous centuries-old traditions that blend religious sanctity with traditional wisdom. Among these enduring customs, the ritual known as Chumouun holds a revered position. Observed across Darbhanga and the wider Mithilanchal belt, this ceremony is performed during auspicious as well as inauspicious occasions. The primary objective is to safeguard the central individual from every form of negative influence, harmful aura, and the evil eye.

Belief in Shielding Against Unseen Negative Influences

Local custom dictates that during significant life events such as weddings or sacred family ceremonies, individuals remain vulnerable to invisible negative influences or disruptive energies. Chumouun is conducted specifically to neutralise these adverse effects. Dr. Kunal Kumar Jha, Head of the Astrology Department at Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, observes that the rite functions essentially as a protective shield, warding off misfortune and keeping unexpected negative incidents at bay.

The Sacred Ritual of Bamboo Basket, Duba Grass and Paddy

The execution of this traditional practice is steered entirely by married women from the family. The women begin by arranging grains of paddy, betel leaves, fresh duba grass, and sacred offerings inside a traditional woven bamboo basket known locally as daura. With these items, they offer initial prayers to the family deity or Kul Devta.

Following the worship, the ritual directly focuses on the primary individual, such as the newlywed bride or groom. The women perform the touch ritual across the individual's entire body, strictly following a sequence that starts at the feet and moves upward toward the head. Using duba grass and paddy grains, known as akshat, they deliberately touch the bodily points. Once this stage concludes, the elderly members of the household step forward to shower the individual with duba and akshat while conveying their blessings.

Spiritual Healing and Aura Cleansing Benefits

Dr. Jha highlights that Chumouun serves not merely as a conventional ritual, but functions as a system of spiritual healing. It yields three core benefits

  • Elimination of Negative Energy: The sacred touch process cleanses the person's surrounding aura, dissolving accumulated negative vibrations.
  • Infusion of Positivity and Peace: It fosters mental calmness, filling the individual's mental and physical presence with refreshed optimism.
  • Blessings for Prosperity: The collective goodwill and benediction from household elders remove upcoming hurdles, bringing enduring joy and prosperity into everyday life.

This unbroken ritual represents the profound spiritual and cultural awareness of the Mithila community, continuing to be preserved with solemn faith across generations.
