A fresh wave of drone strikes targeting commercial maritime routes in the Black Sea has left one merchant vessel sunk and its crew unaccounted for, while a coordinated operation successfully evacuated eighteen sailors from a burning grain carrier. The incidents took place approximately 70 miles (112 km) off the eastern Bulgarian coastal town of Byala, highlighting the growing hazards faced by non-combatant civilian shipping navigating through critical European water corridors.
Pre-Dawn Coordinated Air and Sea Drone Strikes
The strikes occurred at around 03:00 (23:00 GMT), involving a coordinated assault by both aerial and naval drones. Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed the timing and location, noting that the operations struck vessels within the maritime perimeter. One of the primary casualties of the assault was a cargo ship sailing under the flag of Togo. The vessel suffered catastrophic damage and foundered rapidly in the open sea.
A Bulgarian vessel positioned nearby moved rapidly to the coordinates to assist with potential recovery efforts. However, upon arrival, rescue crews found only an overturned boat, floating rafts, and abandoned life jackets drifting on the surface. The exact number of personnel aboard the Togo-flagged vessel prior to the strike was not immediately documented, and the nature of its freight remained unspecified. Authorities have initiated a maritime search and rescue operation to locate the missing crew.
Rescue of Indian and Turkish Mariners From Struck Grain Ship
Simultaneously, a second merchant ship laden with grain came under strike within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone. The impact ignited an onboard fire that resulted in injuries to two crew members. Bulgarian sailors carried out an emergency rescue intervention, pulling all 18 crew members from the stricken grain vessel and transferring the injured sailors for specialized medical treatment.
The evacuated crew consisted of eleven Turkish nationals and seven Indian nationals. Prime Minister Radev denounced the aggressive acts in the maritime area, labeling them an unacceptable breach of international protocols. Addressing reporters, he noted that conducting such military actions within Bulgaria's maritime boundaries constitutes a flagrant violation of maritime law.
Bulgaria's Maritime Zone and Escalating Black Sea Danger
Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone encompasses slightly over 29,000 square kilometers (11,197 square miles), representing approximately 6 percent of the total surface area of the Black Sea. Prime Minister Radev refrained from explicitly identifying the party responsible for launching the drones, though the incident unfolds against the backdrop of heightened Russian military activity across Black Sea navigation corridors as part of the broader conflict with Ukraine.
The perils confronting civilian shipping in the basin have produced repeated casualties in recent days. Earlier on Tuesday, a separate maritime attack near the port city of Odesa killed one crew member and injured seven others. According to Ukrainian media, that vessel was operating under the flag of the Marshall Islands, underscoring that commercial ships operating under diverse maritime registries are routinely being caught in the hostilities.
Military Posturing and Ongoing Conflict Dynamics
The intensification of maritime incidents follows direct statements regarding operational escalation. On Sunday, Russia's defence ministry stated its intention to intensify military strikes across Ukraine. Moscow framed this ramp-up as a direct response to declarations made earlier last week by Zelensky, who had asserted that Kyiv planned to scale up retaliatory strikes against Russian oil refineries.
The hostilities remain rooted in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine initiated by Russia in February 2022. Since the outbreak of war, the Black Sea has served as a contested battleground, with military operations increasingly spilling over into international commercial sea lanes, endangering international crews and critical global food supply shipments.
