In the capital city of Jaipur, the rainy season has brought a renewed craving for tangy and spicy delicacies. A meal, regardless of how delicious it is, finds its perfect complement when paired with a side of traditional pickles, papads, and namkeen. Because of the immense popularity of Bikaneri flavors in Jaipur, traders from Bikaner make it a point to bring their best products to the city every year during the monsoon. Currently, the Art and Craft Fair hosted at the Jawahar Kala Kendra has become the primary destination for these sought-after Bikaneri treats, drawing significant crowds eager to sample the stock.
25 Varieties of Pickles Under One Roof
The fair offers attendees a unique opportunity to explore over 25 distinct varieties of pickles and a staggering 100 types of famous Bikaneri snacks all in one location. Although various types of pickles are available across local markets in the city, the authentic taste associated with the Bikaneri brand remains unparalleled, making these stalls a top priority for locals during the rainy season.
Ramesh Kumawat, a trader who arrived from Bikaner for the fair, states that the products are crafted using pure, homemade spices to ensure 100% quality. He emphasizes that no artificial adulterants are used, keeping both flavor and health considerations in mind. The popularity is such that individuals travel from great distances to reach the fair specifically for these quality pickles.
According to Kumawat, the selection includes 25 varieties such as mango (keri), lemon, ker sangri, jackfruit (kathal), fenugreek (methi), amla, carrot, chili, turmeric, garlic, and bitter gourd (karela). In addition to pickles, there is a high demand for various chutneys and preserves, which are seasonal favorites. Regarding pricing, the cost varies depending on the type of pickle, typically ranging from 300 rupees to 700 rupees, allowing customers to choose based on their preferences and budget.
The Unique Taste of 100 Bikaneri Snacks
Beyond the pickles, the famous Bikaneri namkeen, which enjoys demand globally, is a major highlight of the fair. Kumawat explains that they continue to follow age-old ancestral recipes to prepare these snacks, creating a distinct taste profile. He claims that anyone who tastes their namkeen once is unlikely to forget the experience.
The stall features a massive selection including lentil-based snacks, peanut namkeen, special clove-infused varieties, besan gathiya, and various mix options, totaling 100 types of snacks. The Art and Craft Fair is scheduled to run for one month, operating daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Admission to the fair is completely free, making it highly accessible for the residents of Jaipur.
