Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday stated that the state administration is actively working to build a sustainable entrepreneurship ecosystem that encourages young residents to develop innovative ideas and establish local businesses. Speaking at the Chief Minister's Youth and Innovation Summit 2026 in Shillong, he noted that various structured entrepreneurial programmes and competitions are designed to encourage investors and industry leaders to look at Meghalaya and recognize the thriving activity within the state.
Government as a Catalyst for Growth
Sangma described the government's operational role as that of a catalyst, providing the necessary platforms, progressive policies, and institutional support required to foster enterprise development. He emphasized that transformative economic change does not happen overnight or through a single isolated event. He explained that true momentum is achieved when supportive initiatives happen repeatedly, creating a prevailing cultural feeling among entrepreneurs that the state is a primary hub where innovation takes place.
CMBC Challenge and Innovative Business Proposals
During the official programme, the Chief Minister announced the winners of the Chief Minister's Business Catalyst Challenge and handed over grants to PRIME beneficiaries. As part of this challenge, students from various regional colleges and universities presented diverse business proposals that were thoroughly evaluated by an expert jury. The selected proposals featured practical enterprises, including the manufacture of soap from used cooking oil, compost production utilizing organic waste from the Iewduh market, cold storage facilities tailored for Lakadong turmeric and Khasi mandarin, and the production of single-origin coffee originating from Mawkyrwat.
PRIME Digital Service Provider Platform
The event also marked the official launch of the PRIME Digital Service Provider Platform, positioned as Meghalaya's dedicated doorstep services marketplace. This digital tool will enable everyday citizens to securely book verified local professionals for a wide array of household needs, including carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, cleaning, salon services, and tailoring. Notably, the platform operates on a zero-commission model, which allows individual service providers to set their own pricing structures while steadily building public ratings and digital payment histories. The administration plans to extend this utility to all district headquarters in a structured, phased manner.
Innovation Contest and IT Sector Expansion
Furthermore, the Chief Minister's Innovation Contest 2026 was formally launched, welcoming applications from state residents who possess a functional working prototype. This contest effectively bridges local innovators with relevant government departments and technical experts, establishing viable pathways to public adoption and allowing homegrown solutions to scale effectively. Detailing the broader economic landscape, Sangma highlighted the rapid growth of the local information technology sector by sharing that the state's second IT park has achieved full allotment following its recent inauguration, with corporate entities already expressing strong interest in a prospective third phase.
Human Capital and Institutional Collaboration
The Chief Minister also referenced his recent presentation of the state's early childhood development model to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, framing it as a foundational component of a broader commitment to human capital development. In addition, he urged prominent central institutions located in Shillong, such as IIM, NIFT, and the Indian Institute of Fashion Design, to introduce specialized short-term courses and certificate programmes tailored for local youth and aspiring entrepreneurs. He concluded by thanking Dr. Theodore Lyngdoh and the IIM Shillong team for their dedicated assistance in executing the CMBC programme.
