A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck the Pacific Ocean near the French territory of New Caledonia on Saturday. The seismic event, which occurred deep under the ocean bed, sent shockwaves across the region, prompting immediate assessments of potential hazards. Almost simultaneously, a much milder tremor was recorded in northeastern India, specifically in the state of Assam.
Seismic Activity Near New Caledonia
According to USGS, the earthquake's epicenter was located at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers beneath the ocean floor, while some measurements also recorded its depth at 17.1 kilometers. Because the tremors originated deep at sea, the immediate impact on land was significantly minimized. Despite the high magnitude of 6.6, local authorities have not reported any major casualties or severe structural damage in the island territory. Local officials are currently conducting ground assessments to determine the full impact of the earthquake on coastal infrastructure and nearby settlements.
No Tsunami Danger Detected
Following the underwater disturbance, the US Tsunami Warning System analyzed the threat level for nearby islands and territories. It officially confirmed that there is no active threat of a tsunami for regions including Hawaii, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, or American Samoa. Consequently, no emergency alerts or evacuation orders were issued for these Pacific locations, bringing relief to residents in the low-lying coastal areas of the region.
The Vulnerable Ring of Fire
New Caledonia is geographically positioned in a highly volatile section of the Pacific Ocean known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. This horseshoe-shaped belt is notorious for intense seismic and volcanic activity due to the continuous movement and collision of multiple tectonic plates. While a 6.6 magnitude earthquake is classified as very powerful, the actual destruction depends heavily on factors such as depth, distance from populated centers, and local building resilience. In this instance, the offshore location of the epicenter served as a protective buffer.
Minor Tremors in Assam
In a separate geological event on Saturday morning, parts of northeastern India also experienced ground movement. A minor earthquake jolted the Goalpara district of Assam around 9:00 AM. The National Center for Seismology reported that this domestic tremor measured 3.0 on the Richter scale, with its focus situated at a depth of 5 kilometers below the earth's surface. Fortunately, due to its low intensity, no loss of life or property damage has been reported from any part of Goalpara or its surrounding areas.
