A sweeping leadership reshuffle has taken place across the senior hierarchy of the Pakistan Army, restructuring critical segments of tactical operations, intelligence coordination, and general headquarters. Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has transferred key responsibilities to a reconstituted team of officers during a period marked by persistent security instability across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Shake-Up at Military Intelligence and General Headquarters
The most consequential transition within the apparatus occurred at the apex of military intelligence. Major General Wajid Aziz has been removed from his post as Director General of Military Intelligence. Taking his place, Major General Adil Warraich has been appointed as the new DG MI to lead internal and operational intelligence functions.
Administrative assignments were simultaneously recalibrated inside the General Headquarters. Major General Jawad has stepped into a crucial director general assignment at GHQ. Furthermore, Major General Sajid has assumed the position of DG Z, while Major General Shamrez has taken charge as DG S, repositioning senior officers across specialized directorates.
Strategic Field Deployments, Coast Guard, and Frontier Corps Realignment
Operational assignments on ground formations have also been adjusted to address territorial demands. Major General Khurram Shabbir has taken command of the 17 Division as its General Officer Commanding. To strengthen coastal security and surveillance operations, Major General Ateeq Rafiq has been appointed as the Director General of the Pakistan Coast Guards.
Addressing the prolonged security concerns in Balochistan, the army restructured the command architecture of the paramilitary Frontier Corps. Major General Zafar has taken charge as Inspector General of Frontier Corps South Balochistan. Concurrently, a newly created operational branch dedicated to West Balochistan has been placed under Major General Farhan, who has been appointed as Inspector General of Frontier Corps West Balochistan.
Anticipated Promotions and the New Defense Command Structure
This restructuring across key postings is expected to serve as a prelude to a larger transition within the military echelon. Approximately 11 Major Generals are poised for promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General in the near future. The confirmation of these promotions is anticipated to trigger another chain of upper-tier command movements and corps commander rotations.
These operational realignments follow comprehensive legislative restructuring of the supreme military command hierarchy. On August 20, the National Assembly passed the Defence Forces of Pakistan Act, 2026, alongside amendments to the National Command Authority Act. This statutory reform established the legal architecture for the office of the Chief of Defence Forces. That supreme office is held by Field Marshal Asim Munir, who simultaneously maintains his position as the Chief of Army Staff.
