The Ministry of External Affairs clearly stated that India not only rejects the verdict outright but also completely disputes the validity of the body itself. According to New Delhi, this institution was formed in direct violation of the treaty's provisions, and therefore, none of its directives or rulings will have any legal bearing on the country.
Challenging the Legitimacy of the Arbitration Body
In its official response, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this unlawfully constituted body has issued its so-called verdict on matters relating to the Indus Waters Treaty and interim measures. India’s position remains consistent and clear, maintaining that this forum possesses no jurisdiction or authority to issue binding orders over sovereign decisions made by India. The government has repeatedly asserted that the treaty cannot continue in its current form, especially given ongoing concerns regarding cross-border terrorism.

On the other side, Pakistani officials and deputy leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with India's stance, arguing that the treaty remains effective and refusing to accept unilateral changes. Public rhetoric from various political figures in Pakistan has even included extreme threats regarding water access and regional stability. Despite this pressure, India has firmly refused to bow down to international arbitration that it deems illegitimate, utilizing strong diplomatic arguments backed by its own strategic water projects.
