A shocking case of cyber fraud has come to light in Rajasthan where tricksters extorted a massive sum of two crore rupees from an elderly couple by keeping them under digital arrest for nearly twenty days. Police successfully apprehended the main accused, Lalit Biswas, from West Bengal in connection with this major financial scam. This breakthrough highlights the growing menace of sophisticated cyber crimes targeting vulnerable citizens across the region.
Impersonation and Psychological Pressure
The perpetrators executed their plot using meticulously planned deception. They contacted the elderly couple via phone and video calls, posing as senior officials from various premier institutions including the police, Anti-Terrorism Squad, National Investigation Agency, and the Reserve Bank of India. The scammers accused the couple of being directly involved in funding terrorist activities, claiming they were under active investigation. This alarming accusation severely rattled the elderly victims, driving them into a state of intense panic and making them compliant with the fraudsters' continuous demands.
Twenty Days of Virtual Captivity
Unaware that they were falling victim to an elaborate scam, the couple remained under virtual surveillance for roughly twenty days. During this prolonged period, the criminals prohibited the victims from contacting anyone outside, maintaining relentless psychological pressure by threatening severe legal consequences if instructions were ignored. Exploiting this atmosphere of fear and isolation, the fraudsters coerced the couple into transferring approximately two crore rupees from their accounts under the pretext of clearing their names.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Recognizing the gravity of the offense, law enforcement agencies launched an intensive manhunt to track down the culprits. Providing details about the operation, DIG Cyber Crime Shantnu Kumar Singh stated that acting on vital technical leads and intelligence clues, a police team raided a location in West Bengal and arrested Lalit Biswas. With this recent development, a total of three individuals have now been taken into custody in connection with the case. Investigators are currently interrogating the arrested suspect to uncover the wider network, trace the flow of the swindled money, and identify any remaining accomplices.
Understanding Digital Arrest Scams
Digital arrest has emerged as a particularly deceptive form of cyber crime where scammers exploit the fear of law enforcement to virtually confine victims inside their own homes. Using continuous video conferencing, the criminals monitor the targets round the clock and forbid them from reaching out to family or friends. Funds are subsequently extracted under the guise of verification, investigation, or asset security. Law enforcement continuously urges the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing that no legal framework in the country includes any concept of digital arrest. Citizens receiving threatening calls from individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers are advised not to panic, but to immediately report the incident to local authorities or dial the national cyber helpline at 1930.
