Festive celebrations turned into a state of panic and distress in Uttar Pradesh's Siddharthnagar district when more than 150 people suffered severe food poisoning after eating golgappas sold by a local street vendor. The sudden outbreak affected individuals across all age groups, ranging from young children to elderly residents, sending shockwaves through the entire region. Several children, whose conditions deteriorated rapidly, were admitted to the district medical college under strict medical observation for intensive treatment.
Outbreak affects residents across three villages
The incident is centered around Khersara police station jurisdiction, specifically impacting Kalnakhor Pedari and two or three neighboring villages. According to available details, villagers had purchased golgappas from a local vendor who travelled through the area selling the snack. Shortly after consuming the item, residents began experiencing alarming health complications. What started as mild discomfort quickly escalated into widespread complaints of vomiting, dizziness, and intense abdominal pain as dozens of villagers fell victim simultaneously.
Hospitals scramble as patient numbers surge
Initially, anxious family members rushed the affected individuals to nearby small clinics and local medical practitioners. However, when patients failed to show improvement and the volume of cases continued to mount, they were urgently transferred to the Khersara Community Health Center and nearby primary health facilities. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, attending medical officers promptly referred all critically affected patients to the district medical college for advanced care.
Medical teams monitor children under special watch
The mass illness has presented a major challenge to local administrative and health authorities. While the majority of the patients are currently reported to be in stable condition, the fragile health of several young children remains a primary concern. A dedicated team of doctors is continuously monitoring their vitals and providing ongoing medical support. The unexpected tragedy during a major festival like Diwali has left the surrounding rural community gripped by fear and anxiety.
Similar food poisoning incidents reported across the state
Food safety concerns have previously surfaced in other parts of Uttar Pradesh as well. In Bulandshahr, a celebratory baby shower feast turned into a disaster when nearly 50 to 60 guests fell seriously ill after eating contaminated food. Similar outbreaks have also been documented in Greater Noida where 12 individuals fell sick after eating momos from a single outlet, and in Kolhapur where around 350 people contracted food poisoning after consuming mahaprasad. Authorities in Siddharthnagar are yet to release formal laboratory confirmation regarding the exact cause of the contamination in the golgappas.
