Following extensive bank erosion caused by the Ghaghara river, the surging waters of the Ganga have inundated low-lying urban pockets, turning Nihora Nagar and eight adjoining colonies into isolated islands. With floodwaters continuing to rise steadily, thousands of residents find themselves cut off from essential civic services, struggling without electricity, clean drinking water, or reliable transport.
Residents Desperate for Relief as Submerged Colonies Face Snake Threats
Amid the spreading inundation, whenever any movement or boat approaches the flood-hit enclaves, panicked residents surge forward in hopes of finding administrative assistance. In Nihora Nagar and surrounding localities, women were seen running toward approaching vessels carrying their ration cards, hoping to receive emergency food grains or official support. However, ground realities remain grim as no official relief teams or supplies have reached the affected households, leaving families to fend for themselves amidst rising floodwaters.
Adding to the misery of the stranded population is the constant danger posed by venomous snakes and scorpions entering flooded homes. Resident Krishna Kumar Gupta confirmed that nearly nine full colonies are submerged, cutting off all primary roadways. As the water level rises relentlessly, fear of aquatic creatures and collapsing structures has gripped the local population.
Scarcity of Milk, Drinking Water, and Basic Amenities
Sharing her ordeal, Gudiya Devi, a resident of Nihora Nagar, expressed deep disappointment over the absence of government aid. She highlighted the immense hardship of protecting small children in waterlogged houses where basic food supplies are dwindling. Another local woman recounted how her toddler has been crying in distress due to a lack of milk, noting that navigating flooded streets to fetch dairy items from the main city center has become virtually impossible.
The total blackout caused by disrupted power lines has plunged the area into total darkness every night. Potable water has become scarce, forcing residents to consume whatever stored water remains. In one terrifying incident, a woman whose house was inundated late at night was rescued by boat. Upon reaching safety, she discovered a venomous snake hidden inside her bag. Fortunately, she escaped unharmed, but the encounter has heightened calls for urgent administrative intervention and shelter arrangements.
Injured Seniors and Dark Nights Amplify Human Suffering
The flood crisis has dealt a heavy blow to elderly and vulnerable residents. Prabhavati, a senior citizen, described her worsening living conditions as floodwaters swept through her house. During the inundation, a ceiling fan unexpectedly detached and fell on her, causing serious injuries to her arms. Due to the lack of local medical assistance or emergency transport, she had to board a boat to reach a distant medical store just to buy pain medication. She voiced sharp frustration over the complete lack of medical relief or emergency infrastructure from the district administration.
Another resident, Harina Verma, reported that families are forced to spend nights in absolute darkness without electricity. With food stocks drying up rapidly, residents live under perpetual anxiety. She urged district authorities to immediately deploy relief materials, drinking water tankers, and temporary lighting to the submerged colonies.
Students Navigate Flooded Streets by Boat and Study Under Candlelight
The severe flooding has severely disrupted the education of school-going children across the district. Ishani, a Class 6 student, shared that reaching school now entirely depends on availability of boats. On days when boats are unavailable, she is forced to wade through knee-deep floodwaters, completely soaking her school uniform. At night, in the absence of electricity, she has no option but to complete her homework under candlelight.
Sneha Soni, a Class 4 student, explained that the nightly blackouts prevent her from studying, while morning commutes through submerged pathways have become extremely difficult. Young student Ritu Gupta lamented that her daily routine has been upended, forcing her to remove her shoes and walk barefoot through dirty floodwaters just to move around. Class 6 student Khushbu described the daily commute to school as a painful physical ordeal.
Stepping off a boat after school, Kinjal Gupta, a Class 7 student, spoke emotionally about her fears regarding the deteriorating crisis. She expressed deep concern that if water levels continue to rise, open drains will overflow and submerge the remaining paths, making school attendance impossible and threatening to halt her education altogether.
