A fresh religious controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh following Hindi film actor Sara Ali Khan's recent spiritual journey to the historic Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand. Following the theatrical debut of her recent cinematic venture, she spent three consecutive days at the high-altitude pilgrimage center nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas. During her stay, she offered formal prayers, paid homage before the sacred sanctum, and actively took part in the evening prayer ceremonies. As visual glimpses of her temple rounds circulated widely across digital platforms, a notable Islamic organization stepped forward with strong theological objections.
Islamic Cleric Condemns Temple Rituals
Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, serving as the national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, declared the actor's actions a direct breach of Islamic tenets. Pronouncing a formal religious edict against her temple activities, the cleric asserted that canonical principles prohibit community members from conducting ritualistic worship within temples. He contended that taking part in such customs contradicts the fundamental behavioral code established by traditional theological norms.
Fatwa Prompted by Inquiries From Community Youth
The cleric explained that the formal ruling came as a direct answer to questions posed by young individuals within the community. Several youth had approached him seeking clarification on whether a practicing Muslim could appropriately engage in traditional Hindu rituals at the hill shrine. In response, Bareilvi formally laid down his viewpoint regarding the matter, stating, "All these religious acts are illegitimate and forbidden according to Shariat."
Elaborating on the edict, the cleric argued that the prohibition applies uniformly to both men and women. In his assessment, engaging in rites or spiritual ceremonies inside an alternative place of worship makes an individual culpable under religious precepts. Consequently, he maintained that the performer carries accountability under traditional guidelines and must seek earnest spiritual repentance through forgiveness.
Visuals from the Three Day Spiritual Sojourn
Sara Ali Khan arrived in the Himalayan territory shortly after celebrating the public release of her cinematic project. The revered temple, recognized prominently as one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Shiva, drew her reverence across a multi-day itinerary. Over the course of three days, she observed daily sanctum viewings and joined congregation members during the evening devotional songs. Clips highlighting her moments of reverence quickly gained viral momentum online, prompting widespread discussion that ultimately drew this theological reaction from conservative quarters.
Prior Debates Surrounding Shrine Entry Guidelines
The high-altitude sanctuary has witnessed sensitive conversations regarding entry protocols in earlier instances as well. The Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) had previously encountered discussions concerning potential restrictions on non-Hindu visitors entering the inner perimeters. The temple governing body subsequently put those apprehensions to rest by clarifying that anyone harboring sincere faith, respect, and reverence toward Sanatan customs remains fully welcome at the pilgrimage center. Nonetheless, this forceful objection raised by Bareilvi leadership over a public figure's participation in traditional temple ceremonies has revived questions over cross-faith practices and personal spiritual expression.
