Details of the Collision
According to reports by TrendKia, the accident took place outside the town of Bedford on Friday at approximately 5:15 PM local time. Both passenger trains were traveling southbound, heading toward London's St Pancras station. One of the trains had come to a halt on the tracks when the second train struck it from behind. Although the trains were not traveling at an excessively high speed at the moment of impact, the force was still strong enough to cause widespread injuries and severe distress among the passengers.
An Eyewitness Account of the Terror
Peter Knapp, a passenger who was riding in the rear train during the collision, described the suddenness of the impact. He noted that there was absolutely no warning before the crash occurred. "One moment everything was normal, and the next, it felt like I was thrown hard into the seat in front of me," Knapp recalled. He added that smoke quickly filled the carriage, accompanied by immediate panic, crying, and screaming from confused passengers. Knapp saw people who were unable to speak, suffering from broken bones and covered in blood. Being of a slender build, he managed to squeeze through a gap in the doors to escape the carriage.

Following the crash, emergency services rushed to the scene. A large-scale response was initiated, featuring air ambulances and specialized teams from the East of England Ambulance Service, including their Hazardous Area Response Team. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the Bedfordshire police officially declared it a major incident. They worked alongside local fire and rescue teams to extract and treat the injured.
In the aftermath, the RMT Union, which represents railway workers, stated that it is closely monitoring the situation. The union expressed deep concern over the reports of severe injuries sustained by both passengers and onboard staff. As a direct consequence of the incident, the railway company cancelled all remaining services to and from London's St Pancras station for Friday evening. Furthermore, they indicated that Saturday's schedule remains uncertain and could not be immediately confirmed.
