Right before the commencement of NEET UG 2026 counselling, the Fee Regulatory Authority (FRA) has approved a revised fee structure for private medical colleges. Under the new rate card, annual tuition fees for private medical institutions have seen a sharp increase. Students who could not secure a government college seat or who scored lower marks will now face significantly higher educational expenses, putting additional pressure on middle class budgets and education loan limits.

According to the newly approved rate card by the regulatory body, annual tuition fees across various private medical colleges now span between Rs 7.50 lakh and Rs 17.13 lakh. When these extra expenses are factored in, the total out-of-pocket expenditure rises sharply, disrupting the financial planning of families preparing for admission.
Costliest Private Medical Colleges Listed
Among the institutes listed in the revised framework, Vedanta Institute of Medical Sciences in Palghar stands out as the most expensive, with its annual tuition fee set at Rs 17.13 lakh. Following closely is NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in Nagpur, where fees have been raised from Rs 13.95 lakh to Rs 15.62 lakh per year, reflecting a direct increase of Rs 1.67 lakh.
Other colleges have also introduced substantial hikes ranging between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh. Terna Medical College in Navi Mumbai saw its tuition fees rise from Rs 7.90 lakh to Rs 9.13 lakh. Vasantrao Pawar Medical College in Nashik revised its annual fee upwards from Rs 11.96 lakh to Rs 13.16 lakh. Similarly, Dr. Rajendra Gode Medical College in Amravati registered an increase of approximately Rs 1.82 lakh, bringing its annual tuition cost to Rs 8.93 lakh.
Affordable Options and Institutions With Reduced Fees
While the broader trend shows an upward trajectory, a few institutions remain relatively accessible. Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College in Pune has reported the lowest tuition fee at Rs 7.50 lakh per annum. SSPM Medical College in Sindhudurg presents another low-cost alternative with an annual fee of Rs 7.64 lakh.
In a rare move, KJ Somaiya Medical College in Mumbai reduced its annual tuition charges. The institution lowered its fee from Rs 12 lakh to Rs 9.70 lakh per year, providing financial relief to incoming students.
Hidden Costs and Financial Impact Over the 5.5-Year MBBS Span
An MBBS degree spans 4.5 years of academic instruction followed by a mandatory 1-year internship, making the total duration 5.5 years. Consequently, even a moderate annual increase in tuition fees translates to an additional cumulative financial burden of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh over the entire course period.
Parent representatives and educational experts point out that when hostel accommodation, dining hall charges, and security deposits are included, the comprehensive annual cost easily exceeds Rs 22 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. Parents' associations have voiced strong concerns over recurring annual fee hikes carried out without corresponding upgrades in campus infrastructure or academic facilities.
