Early October in the Kashmir valley typically ushers in a crisp autumn chill, but atmospheric conditions took an unexpected turn on Sunday as intense warmth gripped the entire region. Weather monitoring stations from the central plains of Srinagar to high-altitude getaways like Gulmarg registered some of the highest October temperatures ever documented. The anomalous surge pushed maximum readings several degrees above seasonal averages, leaving residents, growers, and holidaymakers astonished by the uncharacteristic heat across elevations.
Srinagar Sees Warmest October Day in Eighteen Years
In Srinagar, the mercury climbed to 31.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, running 5.7 degrees Celsius above normal for this point in autumn. This reading marked the second-highest maximum temperature ever logged in the city during October. The figure surpassed the previous local high of 31.1 degrees Celsius established on October 2, 2008. The all-time record for Srinagar during October stands at 33.9 degrees Celsius, measured on October 2, 1931. The relentless sunshine and unseasonal warmth created conditions far more reminiscent of summer than mid-autumn.
All-Time Highs Breached in Qazigund and Kokernag
Southern monitoring points in the valley witnessed absolute historical thresholds being rewritten. Qazigund logged a maximum temperature of 31.4 degrees Celsius, a staggering 7.3 degrees Celsius higher than typical seasonal marks. This surpassed the earlier all-time October high of 31.2 degrees Celsius, which had stood since October 1, 1985, cementing Sunday as Qazigund's hottest October day on official record.
Kokernag followed a similar trajectory by establishing an all-time monthly high. The station reported a daytime peak of 29.4 degrees Celsius, exceeding the seasonal baseline by 5.8 degrees Celsius. The reading eclipsed the prior historical October peak of 29.2 degrees Celsius recorded on October 4, 2008, making it the highest temperature ever documented in Kokernag throughout the month of October.
Elevated Slopes of Gulmarg Experience Exceptional Warmth
Even higher alpine elevations offered little respite from the widespread warmth. The renowned hill station of Gulmarg reported a daytime high of 23.2 degrees Celsius, which ran 6.7 degrees Celsius above normal benchmarks. Sunday became the second-hottest October day in the resort's recorded history, climbing past the 23.0 degrees Celsius logged just two days prior on October 3, 2026. Gulmarg's absolute October record remains 23.4 degrees Celsius, registered on October 1, 2009.
Horticulture Distress as Apple Crop Takes Massive Hit
Under regular conditions, October brings a steady, gradual decline in temperatures that aids fruit maturation and harvesting routines. The sudden heatwave across both plains and highlands has altered those dynamics. Unfavourable weather patterns and heat stress have severely harmed apple orchards across Kashmir, causing fruit colour and quality to deteriorate. The horticultural sector now faces an estimated financial loss of approximately 300 to 400 crore rupees, raising significant alarms among local growers over seasonal disruptions.
