According to details provided by Russia's state defense export agency, Rosoboronexport, the rifle belongs to the renowned AK-200 series and is chambered for 7.62x39 mm ammunition. Key characteristics of this platform include exceptional mechanical reliability, structural durability during prolonged field deployment, and simple maintenance requirements in hostile environments. The defense manufacturing roadmap for the AK-203 began in December 2021, when the Government of India executed a major procurement contract with Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited for 6,01,427 units. All rifles under this agreement are assigned for production at the dedicated assembly plant in Korwa, Amethi. Substantial progress has already been achieved under the program; records from Rosoboronexport confirm that by July 2024, IRRPL had successfully delivered an initial batch of 35,000 Indian-manufactured rifles to the Indian Ministry of Defence.
