Pandit Manoj Tripathi, the chief priest of Narayani Shila in Haridwar, explains that handling, utilizing, or gifting any item forged from iron is strictly prohibited throughout Pitru Paksha. Within astrological principles, iron is associated with the planetary influences of Saturn and Rahu, carrying attributes of heavy, negative, and Tamsik energies. Because ancestral rituals demand deep spiritual purity where forebears are venerated in divine form, introducing materials associated with negative attributes disrupts the sanctity of the occasion.
Risk of Impurity in Food and Water Offerings
According to Pandit Manoj Tripathi, cooking food, serving meals, or giving away kitchenware made of iron during ancestral rituals causes offerings to lose their purity. Religious customs consider food and water touched by iron to be defiled, meaning ancestors will not partake in the offerings. As a result, forefathers depart without being satisfied, potentially triggering hardships and spiritual debts commonly referred to as Pitru Dosha for the family left behind.
