Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Tashkent, the capital of the Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan, on Saturday for a two-day official visit. The scene at the Tashkent airport drew significant attention as the Prime Minister's aircraft touched down. Ordinarily, protocol dictates that foreign leaders are received by foreign ministers or senior officials during diplomatic trips. However, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev set aside all established protocols, arriving at the airport personally to accord a grand welcome to Prime Minister Modi, embracing him the moment they came face-to-face.
In addition to this reception, both leaders boarded the same car from the airport to proceed toward their subsequent engagements. President Mirziyoyev's gesture served as a prominent testament to the deep personal chemistry and robust diplomatic friendship shared between the two nations.

Thanking the President of Uzbekistan, the Prime Minister wrote that he was deeply grateful to President Shavkat Mirziyoyev for the warm reception in Tashkent and appreciated the special gesture. He noted that this marks his fourth visit to Uzbekistan, clearly reflecting the growing depth and pace of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Before departing from India, the Prime Minister had also stated in his official remarks that the strategic partnership between India and Uzbekistan has achieved remarkable milestones in recent years. This visit, taking place at the special invitation of President Mirziyoyev, is set to elevate bilateral ties to the next level.
Leaders Visit Yangi Uzbekistan Park Together
Departing from the airport in the same vehicle, the two top leaders traveled directly to the Yangi Uzbekistan Park, which stands as a symbol of Uzbekistan's independence and modern identity.
There, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid a wreath at the Independence Monument to pay homage to the rich history of Uzbekistan. Throughout the program, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev remained present alongside the Prime Minister, briefing him on the historical significance of the monument, which was constructed to mark the 30th anniversary of Uzbekistan's independence.
Delegation Level Talks Focus on Six Key Sectors
During the two-day trip, high-level delegation-level talks will take place between Prime Minister Modi and President Mirziyoyev. These discussions are expected to finalize several major agreements encompassing trade, security, and technology.
Trade and investment talks will center on elevating bilateral commerce to record levels and exploring new opportunities for Indian enterprises within Central Asia. Defense and security cooperation will be enhanced to jointly counter terrorism, radicalization, and regional security challenges across the Central Asian region.
Regarding digital connectivity, India will discuss sharing its robust digital infrastructure and successful models such as UPI with Uzbekistan. Energy and uranium cooperation will see the partnership strengthened in areas ranging from uranium supply to renewable energy.
Skill development initiatives will involve expanding the presence of Indian university campuses in Tashkent and broadening youth skill development programs. Cultural connectivity will witness the signing of a roadmap aimed at easing cross-border movement for citizens, tourists, and students.
Visits Planned to Shastri Memorial and Mahatma Gandhi Center
The historical foundation binding India and Uzbekistan remains exceptionally strong. Over the course of his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also travel to two poignant and culturally significant sites in Tashkent.
At the memorial dedicated to former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Prime Minister Modi will pay his respects. Tashkent is the city where Shastri breathed his last, holding a special place in the hearts of all Indians. Furthermore, the Prime Minister will visit the Mahatma Gandhi Center established at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies to offer floral tributes at the statue of Bapu.
Participation in the SCO Summit in Kyrgyzstan
Upon concluding all bilateral engagements and meetings in Tashkent, Prime Minister Modi will fly directly to the Kyrgyz Republic. In Kyrgyzstan, the Prime Minister will participate in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
This summit is being convened to mark the special 25th anniversary of the founding of the SCO. India has been a full member of the SCO since 2017, playing a pivotal role in enhancing regional security, stability, and trade connectivity.
