A remarkable archaeological discovery has emerged off the coast of Italy, where divers have located an ancient Roman shipwreck dating back more than 2,000 years. The vessel rests on the seabed near Sicily, offering a unique window into ancient maritime trade routes and the preservation of historical artifacts beneath the Mediterranean waters.
Vessel Piled High With Ancient Containers
The newly discovered ship was found heavily laden with hundreds of remarkably well-preserved containers. These vessels, known historically as amphorae, were primarily utilized in the ancient era for transporting and storing essential commodities such as wine and olive oil, as well as grain. Their survival in such pristine condition over two millennia has astonished marine archaeologists.
Fisherman Tip-Off Leads to Deep-Sea Find
Specialized police divers located the historic wreckage resting at a depth of approximately 46m or 150ft following a vital tip-off from local fishermen. According to local media reports, the sunken vessel measures 21m or 69ft in long and spans 6m or 20ft in width.
Dating Back to the Second or First Century BC
Official records from the culture ministry indicate that the vessel originates from the second or 1st Century BC. Italy's Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli praised the find, hailing the wreck as one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years.
A Diver's Astonishing Encounter
Fisherman and free-diver Giacomo De Mola stumbled upon the historic vessel while surveying the seabed near Mazara del Vallo. After noticing a large rock-like formation on his scanner, he decided to investigate further by diving down. Upon getting closer, he realized it was not a rock at all, but rather hundreds of ancient storage jars. Describing the moment as the most incredible discovery of his life, he noted the surreal feeling of being among the first humans in nearly 20 centuries to witness that specific location. He also captured video footage of the site, revealing eels, snappers, and countless other marine life thriving among the ancient jars.
Specialist Police Squad Deployed for Protection
Following the discovery, specialist divers from the Carabinieri Art Squad, a cultural heritage protection arm of Italy's police, were promptly dispatched to the site. Officials have emphasized that strict safety measures will be implemented to safeguard the wreck while ongoing investigations work to determine its precise nature and examine its historical cargo.
